Two Species of Small Honeybee - a Study of the Genus

An English version of the previous item is presented.  M. florea is said to inhabit weeds and secondary bushes which grow on slopes tilled areas and around villages at the edges of valleys and basins below 1900 m altitude.  Nests are made on teh stems of trees or in weedy bushes 2 - 3 m above ground in shady places.  the nest consists of a single comb 200 - 500 sq cm in area.  M. florea is usually mild-tempered but can be agressive when nectar resources are nearly exhausted.  M. andreniformis inhabits secondary forest or trees around villages below 1000 m in altitude.  Nests are built on trees or bushes in open places 3 - 5 m above the ground.  The single comb is 150 - 250 sq cm in area.  This species is said to be very aggressive.  Both species occur in the tropical regions of China but M. andreniformis is limited to the area south of the Tropic of cancer whereas the distribution of M. florea extends to Lushui 26N.
